The United States Mint made the following types of dimes. Coinage of dimes continues through today even though the design has changed several times over the years. The design used on these early coins was similar to all silver coins minted in the late 1700s. Half dimes continued to be made until 1873. However, there is no historical evidence that proves this theory. It is rumored that George Washington used his silverware to make these coins at a metalsmith shop in Philadelphia.
